How sync works, and why it is iCloud
Actium does not run a sync service. Your library moves between your Mac, iPhone, and iPad through your own iCloud Drive, under your own Apple ID, with the same privacy and encryption as the rest of the files there. There is no Actium account, no Actium server, and nothing for Actium to see.
What actually syncs?
A repository is a real folder. What syncs is the folder's contents: your documents, and the small _actium sidecar files Actium writes next to them for metadata, annotations, and identifiers. Both are ordinary files, so if the folder lives in iCloud Drive they travel with everything else in it.
The local search index does not sync. Each device keeps its own, rebuilt from the files, so the index is never something that can arrive out of date or in conflict.
Why iCloud Drive instead of a cloud of Actium's own?
Because you already have it. iCloud Drive is where your documents most likely already sit, backed by an account you already manage and trust with the rest of your files. A separate Actium cloud would mean another sign-in, another company holding copies of your work, another surface to breach, and, sooner or later, another subscription.
Actium's job is the library you build on top of your files, not the pipe underneath them. Leaving sync to Apple keeps the file layer plain, portable, and yours: if you ever stop using Actium, the folders and their readable sidecars are still right there in iCloud Drive.
What can the developer see?
Nothing. There is no Actium server anywhere in the sync path. Files move between your devices and Apple; Matthew De George, the developer, has no account, no keys, and no access.
How is the synced data protected?
By iCloud Drive. Apple encrypts it in transit and at rest as standard. If you turn on Advanced Data Protection for your Apple Account, your Actium documents and sidecars become end-to-end encrypted along with the rest of your iCloud Drive, with no change needed in Actium.
Do I have to use iCloud?
No. Point Actium at a folder on local storage and it works fully on that Mac, just without cross-device sync. You can mix freely: some repositories in iCloud Drive for the devices to share, others kept local.
What happens if two devices change the same item?
Actium writes many small per-item sidecar files rather than one large database, so iCloud Drive resolves most edits cleanly at the file level. A genuine simultaneous change to the same item on two devices can still collide. When that happens Actium notices the conflicting sidecars and surfaces them in the Health view for you to resolve, rather than silently keeping one and discarding the other.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Everything is local files; iCloud Drive catches up when the device reconnects. Actium is built for the in-between state too — it recognises a file that has not finished downloading and waits for it instead of treating it as missing.
In one line
Actium is an app for your files, not a home for them. The sync, the account, and the encryption are iCloud's; Actium just keeps a good library on top.
